http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?secti ... le-6769571KINGWOOD, TX (KTRK) -- Dozens of people visiting a park in the Kingwood area got stranded by a big sink hole yesterday.
Authorities say the 5-foot deep hole opened up around 6pm at River Grove Park. According to officers on the scene, there were about 20 people who slept in their vehicles overnight because those vehicles were stuck.
Around 100 people were in the park when the sink hole opened up. Most were able to use a small, narrow pedestrian bridge to get out, but they had to leave their cars behind.
People at the park with whom we spoke park said the road seemed fine. Obviously it was not.
"I came across the road and mud was still sliding in and we called the officers and they came to check everything out, and they told everyone that they were going to be stuck for the night," said eyewitness John Uschak.
The hole stretches across the entire road. Authorities believe flood waters or some damage caused the ground to give way.
Many people are waiting to figure out when they can get their vehicles. Public Works will be out sometime today, but authorities say it could take a several days to repair the road.
